His struggles make him a compelling protagonist that readers root for.  His powers were obtained by a mark in the shape of a star that gave tremendous capabilities to its bearer.  This seemed to grant unlimited forces to its wielder to defeat top caliber adversaries.  The Star Brand has evolved over the years into new storylines and different pieces.
